Digital & Innovative Learning Opportunities

DC Public Schools have individualized student learning plans to progress mastery-based educational opportunities. Dual enrollment and CTE programming are also available.

Transformational Learning Opportunities:


Virtual & Online Schooling:

  • Friendship Online Academy is the only school offering free, virtual learning for students living in the District of Columbia. The school’s 2021-22 Annual Report notes that 535 students were enrolled in grades K-8.


Digital Learning Resources:

  • Distance learning resources are no longer available on the Office of the State Superintendent of Education portal.


Career & Technical and/or Work-based Education:

  • DC Public Schools encourages and has a well-established Career & Technical Education program, with designated NAF Academies that “are rigorous, dynamic, industry-aligned college and career readiness programs that ensure students are prepared for in-demand, high-growth careers and postsecondary pathways.” 

  • DCPS CTE programs emphasize the acquisition of industry-recognized certifications, equipping students for employment opportunities upon completion. Certain programs also offer the chance for students to earn college credits concurrently with their high school diploma through collaborative agreements with institutions.


Innovation Schools, Zones, and/or Districts:

  • In recent years, Washington D.C. has made a few efforts to increase innovation and promote innovation. An initiative called Design Lab was created in 2018 to reimagine schools; the initiative provides school leaders with a network, resources, and support required to innovate. 

  • In 2019, the District launched DCPS Connected Schools, whose mission is to accelerate student outcomes by building resource hubs that connect schools, community actors, local leaders, and government agencies.
