Governor Mills, the daughter of a public-school teacher and someone who raised five daughters who attended public schools, has yet to publicly acknowledge the power of school choice. Her leadership impartiality is mirrored in the state legislature. It may be time for new leadership to bring school choice options to the Pine Tree state.
Despite having one of the nation’s earliest voucher programs, an ESA program failed in the House during the 2023 session, signaling the state legislature's apprehension to embrace education freedom initiatives. Hopefully, ongoing GOP support and organizations like St. George Municipal School Unit, a 2023 Yass Prize Finalist providing state-of-the-art CTE training to students K-12, can influence legislators to enact more expansive education freedom policies.
Blaine is dead and opportunity is consequently growing in the Pine Tree state. In December 2021, the U.S. Supreme Court argued in Carson v. Makin and in a 6-3 ruling, that a state may not prohibit families that participate in educational choice programs from selecting schools that provide religious instruction. The case was initially filed by Maine families who were denied a choice of a private school simply because it was religious. Chief Justice Roberts, writing for the majority, held that Maine "violated the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment" when it prohibited parents from choosing religious educational options in a school choice program.
While not clearly accessible using the dropdowns on Maine’s Department of Education homepage, school report cards can be found using the search bar or by accessing the “ESSA Dashboard” section. Measures like student demographics, per-pupil spending, teacher workforce, assessment, and graduation data, among other measures, are easy to navigate, with an option to view school data via a snapshot, or a more detailed view.
While some educational options can be found from Maine’s Department of Education homepage, information about charter schools can be found on the state’s main government website, which is home to Maine’s Charter School Commission.
School Board elections in Maine occur separately from the general election cycle, often resulting in reduced parental influence and a diminished ability to make their voices heard due to lower voter turnout.
