Arizona’s innovation environment provides families with numerous unique options, including work-based learning with the potential to earn credits towards graduation, state supported efforts to promote personalized, mastery- and competency-based learning, which can also be used to graduate. Additionally, there is a robust blended and online education community.
Transformational Learning Opportunities:
Career & Technical and/or Work-based Education:Virtual & Online Schooling:Arizona offers a variety of online learning options! As of 2023, three schools - Arizona Virtual Academy, Insight Academy of Arizona, and Grand Canyon Private Academy - are open for students located anywhere in the state. Additionally, Arizona’s Online Instruction program offers virtual or online learning in 115 Arizona school districts and 22 charter schools. ASU Preparatory Academy and Sunnyside Unified School District are members of Digital Promise’s League of Innovative Schools, collectively serving roughly 22,000 students. The League of Innovative Schools is a national network of school leaders in 150 districts in 38 states that aim to enhance and scale digital learning opportunities for students across the nation.Digital Learning Resources:The state provides teachers with multiple instructional resources to integrate technology in the classroom.Curious about your district’s internet access? ConnectK-12 provides state- and district-specific information on access to the recommended bandwidth speeds and monthly internet costs. Arizona allows schools to offer work-based learning opportunities to students, as demonstrated by the Department of Education’s commitment to Career and Technical Education, which provides a portal for families to explore available CTE programming. Further, participation in CTE or work-based learning programs may allow students to earn credit, given local school district approval. Personalized, Competency- and/or Mastery-based Learning:In an effort to promote and advocate for personalized learning, The Center for the Future of Arizona boasts a Personalized Learning Network (AZPLN), which “provides pathways for individual educators, schools, and district/charter networks to adopt personalized, competency-based learning and create more excellent and equitable outcomes for all students.” The organization currently partners with Amphitheater Public Schools, Mesa Public Schools, Santa Cruz Valley Unified School District No. 35, Yuma Union High School District, and Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College.
