Parents have decent access to school data via Alaska’s school report card system but little power beyond that. Alaska’s charter school law limits charter schools to be authorized solely by school districts and do not have a robust choice program. Alaska has a large rural population and large distances between communities that could be well served by robust online options. Unfortunately, Alaskans have done little to serve the largely rural student population. Innovative online offerings and policies to promote personlized learning would be a big help.
